PRESCRIBING AXONA®

HOW AXONA IS SUPPLIED

Axona® is supplied as a powder, and is available in convenient individual packets of 40 grams per packet (containing 20 grams of MCTs, specifically caprylic triglyceride), or as a patient starter kit. It is recommended that patients take one packet of Axona once a day shortly after breakfast or lunch, whichever is larger.

Both the patients and their caregivers should be instructed in the correct administration amount and schedule for Axona based on medical evaluation of the patient by the supervising physician.

ONE PACKET—ONCE A DAY — SHORTLY AFTER BREAKFAST OR LUNCH

Axona is available only by prescription, and patients must be under the supervision of a physician. It is recommended that patients take one packet of Axona once a day shortly after breakfast or lunch. The contents of each packet of Axona should be added to 4 to 8 ounces (118 to 236 milliliters) of water or other liquid as preferred, and shaken or blended until fully mixed.

MANAGING GASTROINTESTINAL SYMPTOMS

Each dose of Axona contains 20 grams of caprylic triglyceride. Due to the rapid digestion of Axona, some patients may experience indigestion, nausea or diarrhea. In many cases, patients have reported that their symptoms improved when Axona was taken between 15 and 30 minutes after consuming a full meal (preferably after breakfast or lunch). In addition, meals containing fat and protein will slow the digestion of the Axona and may reduce feelings of stomach upset. Adding ice and sipping the Axona drink slowly may also slow digestion and lessen potential side effects.

For those who are unable to tolerate a full dose of Axona, a graduated dosing schedule can be followed to reduce side effects.

Over-the-counter medications such as simethicone, antacids, and antidiarrheals can be useful. Patients with persistent side effects should seek the advice of their healthcare provider.
